5 Underrated resources for developing a conversational writing style

The internet has the attention span of a monkey and the memory of a goldfish.

Most people don’t want writing that’s “artsy,” but the one that feels like it’s talking directly to them.

That’s why a conversational writing style works. Here are some underrated ways to develop it…

1. Cinema

No screenwriter in the world ever said “let me write dialogues that no one understands and isn’t relatable to real life.”

What you can learn from cinema is how to bring dramatic gravity to your writing without sounding like Shakespeare.

2. Song lyrics

Apart from being cuddled by thumping beats, lyrics are the heart of a song with just one purpose: Communication.

And that’s what matters when you’re writing to be understood, not impressed.

Songs help you understand how simple words come together to rhyme.

3. Food menu

Spoiler alert: Mike is a copywriter

People order food based on reading what the dish is about and the description has to take care of that.

To be short but enough to get people to take action.

Menus help you learn new sensory words, and how to write about something that’s made from a lot of stuff.

4. Physical Pamphlets

Pamphlets help you understand the importance of a good offer. There isn’t enough real estate for long or short copy.

It’s just about a headline, an offer, and some contact details. And sometimes that’s enough.

Words chosen with prior care can do the damage they need to.

5. Community forums

These are great internet destinations to do your voice of customer research too.

People express what they’re passionate about in a way that no one judges them for.

You get to learn their lingo and see how a certain market segment talks. Casually…conversationally.
